Canada’s aerospace industry is built on innovation, expertise, and a passionate community of professionals who continue to propel it forward. At AIAC, we are committed to supporting the next generation of aerospace leaders through initiatives like the Dave Caddey Memorial Scholarship, which helps students and young professionals as they embark on their aerospace careers.
The 2023 Dave Caddey Memorial Scholarship, Sherif Azmy, is a shining example of the scholarship’s impact. After completing his degree in mechanical engineering with a specialization in aerospace, Sherif began his full-time career with a leading aerospace company. Reflecting on his journey, Sherif shares how the scholarship helped opened doors and broadened his horizons.
A Great Opportunity for Young Aerospace Professionals
“Receiving the Dave Caddey scholarship was a great honor, and a moment I doubt I would ever forget,” Sherif recalls. The scholarship provided him the opportunity to attend the Canadian Aerospace Summit, the national aerospace event of the year in Canada, that brings together the brightest minds and top companies from across the industry. “The networking at the Summit was excellent,” Sherif says. “I had great exposure and some very interesting conversations with people from many of Canada’s leading aerospace companies.”
As a young professional passionate about aerospace, attending the Summit was more than just an opportunity to collect business cards. “It helped me realize how tight-knit the aerospace industry in Canada is,” Sherif reflects. “Receiving the award and giving a speech in front of these important aerospace figures is something I will forever remember.”
Sherif wasn’t just an attendee at the Summit—he became part of the community. “Many people came up to me afterward to congratulate me, ask about my future plans, and offer support,” he says. “The aerospace community in Canada is incredibly supportive, and I had a lot of people offering advice and help if I ever needed it.”
The Application Process and AIAC Support
One of the highlights of the scholarship, Sherif says, was the seamless support he received throughout the application process. “The communication and support from AIAC were top-notch. Everyone was so friendly and helpful, and the planning was flawless,” Sherif notes. The AIAC team also played an active role in his networking efforts, going out of their way to introduce him to industry professionals.
For anyone considering applying for the scholarship, Sherif emphasizes how valuable it can be. “It’s a great opportunity to gain more knowledge about the Canadian aerospace field and get more exposure within the community. On top of that, the financial support is great for tuition fees,” he adds.
Looking Ahead
Since receiving the scholarship and attending the Summit, Sherif has successfully transitioned into a full-time role in the aerospace industry. He is thriving in a hands-on, technical position where he’s able to apply the skills he gained during his education. “I’m happy that I’m making an impact in the aerospace field,” he says.
For Sherif, the Dave Caddey Memorial Scholarship was much more than financial assistance—it was a stepping stone to building a career and making connections that will last a lifetime.
Advice for Future Applicants
To those considering applying for the scholarship, Sherif offers some words of wisdom: “If aerospace is something that interests you, I strongly recommend applying for this scholarship. It’s a great way to get your face out there, and it might open more doors than you expect.”
The Dave Caddey Memorial Scholarship continues to empower young professionals like Sherif, offering not only financial support but also a chance to engage with a dynamic community and propel their careers forward in Canada’s world-class aerospace industry.
