OTTAWA (ONTARIO) – Mike Mueller, President and CEO of the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada, issued the following statement in response to Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland’s economic update:

“Canada’s aerospace industry is supportive of all measures that ensure it continues to be strong and vibrant.  As the sector continues to face challenges, it is more important than ever that we work together because the industry is a major driver of Canadian jobs and exports and is a net contributor to Canada’s economy.

“Our companies, large and small, are major exporters integral to global supply chains and are experiencing challenges with the disruptions. For many companies across the aerospace value chain, particularly the small and medium-sized businesses, the continuing uncertainty means full recovery is still a long way off.

“Increasing certainty for workers and businesses, especially SMEs, with a long-term plan for our sector will help retain and create jobs, scale up exports, and support green innovation, all of which is critical to Canada’s long-term economic recovery.

“Now is also not the time to further burden the industry and its workers with the consequences of implementing additional taxes on aircraft manufacturing.  We will continue to engage with Ministers and officials on the proposed tax on the sale of aircraft.”
