L. David Caplan, former AIAC chairman and honourary life member, passes away

It is with sadness that we announce that L. David Caplan, a former AIAC chairman and honourary life member, passed away on June 2, 2018 at the age of 78.

Mr. Caplan was an member of AIAC’s Board of Directors from 1988-2000 and served as AIAC’s Chair and Vice Chair in 1989-90 and 1988-89 respectively. He was appointed by the AIAC Board as an honorary life member in September 2000.

A graduate of McGill and chartered accountant, Mr. Caplan had a 40-year plus career at Pratt & Whitney Canada, serving as president and chairman from 1984 until his retirement as chairman in 2001.

Under Mr. Caplan’s visionary leadership, P&WC flourished, with market leadership, investment in new engine families, and an emphasis on exceptional customer service. Mr. Caplan led significant footprint expansion with new operations in Lethbridge AB, Halifax NS, service centres in Atlanta GA, Long Beach CA, Wichita KS, Muskegon, MI and around the globe; establishing operations in Poland and China and customer service centers in Singapore and Luton UK,  in addition to expanding the Designated Overhaul Facility (DOF) network.

He was a major supporter of Centraide since its inception, later sitting on the Council of Governors for Centraide.

He was a recipient of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute’s C.D. Howe award in 1994.

Mr. Caplan is mourned by his wife, Marion, daughters Stephanie and Andrea and a large extended family, colleagues and friends.
