Alenia Aermacchi North America is a subsidiary of Alenia Aermacchi and part of the Finmeccanica Group. Alenia Aermacchi North America offers the C-27J Spartan, a multi-mission twin turboprop aircraft that meets and exceeds all of Canada’s Fixed Wing Search and Rescue (SAR) requirements.
The C-27J Spartan will provide Canada with better performance capabilities than current SAR aircraft, including greater speed, range, capacity, manouevrability, visibility, jump safety and technological features. The twin-engine C-27J has been designed, built and equipped for completely autonomous deployment in extreme conditions such as those found in Canada's North. The aircraft can operate safely from even the most remote, isolated Canadian locations.
The C-27J is the ideal military multi-mission aircraft – a no-risk, no-compromise solution. It is competitively priced and will prove to be the best option for Canada in any competition. The C-27J can meet Canada's SAR requirements at as little as a third of the operating costs of the current aging fleets used for this role.
One of the key elements of SAR operations is the ability to reach the search area quickly - every second counts when lives are on the line. Speed is particularly important given Canada’s vast territory of land and ocean that must be covered. Boasting a maximum speed of 325 KTAS (602 km/h), he C-27J is a very responsive platform and performs safely at the slow speeds and low altitudes required for searching. It can make tight turns, climb and descend rapidly, and was designed for short take-off and landing (STOL) on unprepared fields and landing strips. With a rugged construction, highest in its class power-to-weight ratio, and the ability to perform fighter aircraft like, 3.0g force maneuvers, the C-27J is built for the SAR mission.
In production since 2001, the C-27J Spartan has been selected by a total of nine national air forces. The aircraft has been delivered to Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, the United States, Lithuania, Romania, Morocco and Mexico and has been selected by Slovakia.
The launch of the FWSAR program in Canada will provide $3 billion of work and support for hundreds of high quality jobs through direct industrial and regional benefits (IRBs) – an outstanding economic stimulus for Canada’s aerospace sector.
